Third International Conference

Women in Mathematics in
South-Eastern Europe

December 8 – 9, 2022,
Sofia, Bulgaria

organized by

International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia)
Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians (UBM)
Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas at the University of Miami (IMSA)

The International Center for Mathematical Sciences – Sofia (ICMS-Sofia), affiliated with the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, is a dynamic research unit for developing and dissemination of cutting edge new directions in Mathematics. It is created with the mission to disseminate advances in the research in Mathematics and its applications to the mathematical and scientific communities in South-Eastern Europe; to connect Bulgarian Mathematics with leading mathematical institutions and increase the level of Bulgarian science and education. Part of the activities of the Center is related to supporting the reintegration and the career development of promising young Bulgarian mathematicians.

The initiative Women in Mathematics of South-Eastern Europe, aiming at promoting the role of female mathematicians, started in Dec 2020, when the inaugural conference took place. We intend to make these conferences annual. The main goal of these conferences is to celebrate women in Mathematics, to disseminate new results and create new long-term collaborations among scientists in South-Eastern Europe. We hope Women in Mathematics of South-Eastern Europe will attract the attention of young researchers and researchers from less-favoured countries.

This conference is an EMS Special Event supported by the European Mathematical Society.

Canonical Metrics in Complex Geometry

An important tool to study complex non Kaehler manifolds is to look for “canonical metrics”, where the word canonical is referred to some special properties of the associated fundamental form.

A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold is called pluriclosed if the torsion of the associated Bismut connection is closed and it is called balanced if its fundamental form is co-closed.

In the talk I will focus on pluriclosed and balanced metrics, showing some general results and new constructions of compact non-Kaehler manifolds.

The Theory of Knotoids and Applications

Turaev’s theory of knotoids is a natural extension of classical knot theory. Although it was initiated with computational motivations, this theory developed into a very fruitful area of research in low-dimensional topology. It has been extended to other diagrammatic settings and has found interesting applications, for example in the study of proteins.
