Former Directors

Oleg Mushkarov obtained his Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in 1979 and 1999, respectively, at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI- BAS ). In 2001 he became a full professor at IMI-BAS, in 2012 he was elected Corresponding member and in 2021 Full member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
His research is devoted to the analysis and geometry of almost complex manifolds, geometry of Hermitian surfaces, geometry of twistor spaces, N. Hitchin ‘s generalized complex geometry, the theory of harmonic maps, etc. His ideas, scientific contributions and his work with young people define him as the creator (together with Johann Davidov) of the Bulgarian school in complex differential geometry.
Prof. Mushkarov was the director of the ICMS in the period 2020-2024.

Blagovest Sendov graduated in Mathematics from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1956. He obtained his PhD degree in Mathematics from Sofia University (1956) and the degree Doctor of Sciences from Steklov Mathematical Institute, Moscow (1967). He was elected Corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1974, and became a Full member in 1981.
His main contributions lie in approximation theory, mathematical modeling in biology, numerical methods, and computer science. He laid the foundation for the theory of Hausdorff approximations and founded the Bulgarian mathematical school in this field, which is internationally recognized. He authored over 200 scientific papers, several monographs, numerous textbooks, and popular science papers.
Among the many high-ranking positions he has held were: Rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Scientific Secretary-General of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, President of the National Assembly of Bulgaria, and Ambassador of Bulgaria to Japan. Blagovest Sendov was a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Ukraine Academy of Sciences, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
Prof. Blagovest Sendov was the first director of the ICMS in the period 2019-2020.
