The Fifth International Conference “Women in Mathematics in South-Eastern Europe” was officially opened, bringing together prominent mathematicians from a variety of fields. The event serves as a platform for fostering collaboration and highlighting the achievements of women in mathematics.
The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Evelina Slavcheva. In her opening remarks, Prof. Slavcheva emphasized the essential role of women in advancing science, particularly in the field of mathematics.
Welcoming the attendees, Prof. Peter Boyvalenkov, Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, and Prof. Velichka Milousheva, Deputy Director of IMI-BAS and Vice-Director of ICMS-Sofia, extended their appreciation to the participants for their contributions to the mathematical community.
A notable highlight was the virtual participation of Prof. Ludmil Katzarkov, former Scientific Director of ICMS, who joined from France via Zoom to express his admiration to the organizers for their efforts in promoting the role of women in mathematics and to the participants for their enthusiasm. Additionally, Prof. Mina Teicher, a renowned mathematician from the Department of Mathematics and Gonda Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, addressed the attendees from Miami, congratulating them on their commitment to excellence in the mathematical science.
